Why Blog?

Why blog?

For business people it is a way to be noticed but contrary to the consumer blogger who wants to be noticed by his peers or community the business blogger needs to be noticed by Google.  Yes Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. are the audience for the business blogger.  If you only remember one thing from this blog post make it this.  Writing a 200 or 300 word blog post on a specific topic that is highly relevant to your business is the same to Google as creating a new web page for your website.  100 blog posts are equal to 100 web pages to the search engines if the content is relevant to the products and services you sell.

A blog offers maybe the best way for a small business person to be noticed or even become dominant in their market.  Consider this, if you are a heating and air conditioning contractor in a city of 500,000 people and you write a blog post 3 days a week for one year.  You would have 156 posts or 156 additional pages for your business being indexed by the search engines.   How many of your competitors are doing that? What would it cost to have your web designer build and implement 156 new web pages? How good would it be to appear at #1 or #2 in the organic search results in the major search engines?

No time or interest in writing a blog?  I know a few people who would be happy to write blog posts for your business and it does not cost a lot.  It’s a very effective way to invest a portion of your advertising budget.  Blogging or Yellow pages? Think about it’s a real choice and an important decision.

I smell money my friend.  Go get it.

Pay-per-click experiment

First, let me tell you that I am running numerous Search Engine Marketing campaigns for my clients and I have placed all of them with professional managers.  Fortunately, all the campaigns are working well and the clients are satisfied with the results.

As an experiment and learning experience I’ve decided to do a self managed PPC campaign for my own company.  Though I’ve been managing and overseeing PPC campaigns for many years I’ve little experience with the hands-on, nit-tie gritty decision making process.  I confronted my first challenge last night as I was choosing my keywords and setting up the campaign in Google Adwords.

Here is the first lesson Internet marketing is a very competitive industry segment which makes the click cost fairly high.  The most popular keyword clicks cost from $6 to $12 each creating some interesting budget challenges.  At this cost per click I can afford less than one click a day and I’m thinking the chances of that one click being a good lead are pretty small.   But I have a solution.

The next few posts will be a chronicle of my experiences running my own pay-per-click advertising campaign.   Should be fun.

Search Engine Optimization Top 10 Free Small Business SEO Tools

I found a blog post today with the Top 10 Free Small Business SEO Tools. The article is from SmallBusinessComputing.com. This is by far the best, to the point, brief and useful list of SEO tools I’ve found.  It needs to be simple and to the point for me to get it and this one worked for me.  You will note that there aren’t many surprises on the list.  The value here is the writer James A. Martin took the time to make a list with just 10 items.  That means he took the time to eliminate dozens if not hundreds of other tools and trick.  I am most thankful for that part.

Google won with the most tools including: AdWords Keyword Tool, Google Analytics, Google Insights for Search, Google Trends, Google Local Business Center and finally to complete my list of items in an attempt to get some visitors to this blog, Google Webmaster Tools.  Facebook makes an appearance in addition to Twitter.

So why post this in public when I sell these services? Here’s my thinking.  I have a garage full of beautiful tools that I have collected over the years.  I know how all of them work and have experience doing all kinds of projects.  I even built a two story shed without drawings that came out great.>/p>

These days all those tools pretty much sit unused while I hire people to bring their tools to my house and do the work I need done.  That’s life.  I have tools to fix the car I know where the auto parts store is but there is no way I am ever going to fix my own car.  In my mind Internet Marketing works the same way. Small business needs me and thousands of others like me to do the work.

I think the list is also a good commentary on the complexity of online marketing.  The list makes me feel needed and we all want that.
